President Donald Trump threatens to impose higher tariffs to Japanese exports to the United States because he claims that Japan is not ready to buy rice from the USA.
Trump comments on Japan's rice requirements
"You don't want to accept our rice, even though you have a massive shortage of travel. In other words, we will simply send you a letter and we look forward to being a trading partner for many years," said Trump in a Post on Truth Social.
planned messages about customs adjustments
The President has recently announced that his government will soon send letters to some foreign countries in which the new customs duties will be communicated. Trump's contribution suggests that Japan could be among the trading partners who are exposed to higher tariffs.
deadline for customs regulations
Trump's message on Truth Social comes just a week before the deadline on July 9, at which the 90-day suspension of the "mutual" tariff ends. It is unclear what will happen to the customs rates for the dozens of affected countries.
changes in customs tariffs
Before Trump announced the suspension, Japanese exports were subject to a minimum customs set of 24 %at short notice. Since the exposure came into force, they have been subject to the universal sentence of 10 %.
