Ski lift in Spanish seaside resort collapses and hurt many
In a tragic incident in the Astun ski area in the Pyrenees, Spain, many people have been injured after a ski lift collapsed. According to emergency officials, around 30 people were injured when the accident took place around 12:00 p.m. local time. The Aragon civil protection authority confirmed the number of injuries and reported on a rapid rescue operation.
injured and medical care
The injured people had to be hospitalized. Among them were two patients with "highest priority" and two others who needed "urgent medical care". Fortunately, there were no deaths, as the press office further informed.
cause of the collapse
The Spanish civilian group said that the ski lift reached a height of 15 meters (over 49 feet). Reports of the Spanish public service broadcast RTVE state that part of the structure collapsed after one of the straps became loose. This incident led some of the seats to overturn and the passengers were destabilized.
evacuation of the slopes visitors
Videos from the scene of the accident published by the Civil Guard show numerous people who stand in the snow on the mountain and stuck after the incident. An eyewitness reported RTVE: "It is as if a cable is torn, the chairs jumped and the people were thrown down." Until 3:00 p.m. local time, all persons who were stranded by the breakdown of the ski lift were evacuated, as the government delegate from Aragon, Fernando Beltrán Blazquez, announced on X.
reactions of the authorities
The Spanish President Pedro Sanchez showed himself "shocked" about the news and stated that he spoke to the President of Aragon to offer the support of the Spanish government. "Our whole sympathy applies to the injured and their families," said Sanchez.
