Heavy flood disaster in Uganda: 40 dead and hundreds of missing!
Bulambuli, Uganda - in Uganda, a severe landslide has left devastating consequences after persistent rainfall. The landslide occurred in the Bulambuli region, where numerous villages have been affected since the end of November. To date, at least 40 fatalities have been confirmed. Authorities expect up to 100 missing persons who may have been buried alive, as the commissioner Faheera Mpalanyi responsible for Bulambuli explained, according to the Volksblatt . The rescue work is extremely difficult because many streets and bridges are impassable through the earth masses. More than 2,500 people had to be accommodated in provisional camps.
catastrophic circumstances of the rescue actions
like the Vulkane , the emergency services are dependent on the simplest means. Without heavy equipment, they dig for survivors and sacrifice with shovels and their bare hands. A total of 15 injured people were taken to the hospital. There are also at least six children among the deaths, which reinforces the tragedy of the situation. The government has now published a disaster warning that indicates the flooded rivers, destroyed infrastructure and the dangers for the population.
Uganda is not facing such a natural disaster for the first time. The region has a story of devastating landslides and floods that demanded great losses. A similar incident in 2010 led to around 300 deaths in the Bududa region. Despite the repeated dangers, the population remains in this fertile area because it is strongly associated with its traditional ways of life. The continued rainfall of the current little rainy season, which are expected between September and December, have particularly dramatic effects this year.
