Corruption in the church? Archbishop calls for self -criticism in Kenya!
Kisumu, Kenia - The Archbishop of Kisumu, Maurice Muhatia Makumba, addressed corruption within the church in Kenya in a haunting sermon. At the opening of the 2025 fasting campaign, Makumba made it clear: "If we think about corruption this year, we should not point to the government with our fingers, but first at the church." These words came at a time when Kenya discussed the problematic donations from politicians to church representatives who were previously publicly convicted by the Archdiocese of Nairobi, such as kathpress reported.
makumba emphasized the need to think about the deeply rooted corruption not only in society, but in particular in its own ranks. "We first have to get rid of corruption in our communities as men and women of faith," says the bishop, who also acts as chairman of the Kenyan conference of the Catholic bishops (KCCB). The archbishop emphasized that without a profound self -criticism and moral renewal, the community can have no future, since "the towers on sand" are built, as well as Vatican News noted.
In his remarks, Makumba calls for a fundamental change in discourse to corruption. It is crucial that both the church representatives and the faithful in their parishes have an honest examination of this topic. The discussion about the moral norms within the church is of great importance for him: "The discourse on the vice of corruption in Kenya must change". These critical views of the archbishop call for self -reflection and focus on the integrity of the church institutions.
