Italy must finally compensate refugees for Diciotti drama!
Lampedusa, Italien - Matteo Salvini, the former Italian Minister of the Interior, is faced with serious legal consequences after being held responsible for unnecessarily suffering migrants in distress. In a fateful incident in August 2018, 190 migrants on board the Diciotti ship were not allowed to go ashore, since Salvini banned it until the Catholic Church offered irregular migrants. As the crown reported , the Italian government must now pay the migrants compensation after the Supreme Court has decided that this three -week freedom deprivation was not lawful. A court will now have to determine the exact amount of damage.
Another procedure against Salvini is in the starting blocks: he has to be responsible for the strands of the Spanish rescue ship Open Arms, which stuck with 147 rescued refugees in the Mediterranean for 19 days. Like Euronews reported, he will be accused of abuse of office and freedom robbery. In their despair, the migrants had even tried to jump overboard, while captain and crew in vain asked for a secure point of contact. On August 20, 2019, a court finally allowed the ship in Lampedusa after a court order.
During his term in office,Salvini pursued a strict migration policy and argues that these measures disabled humanitarian rescue campaigns to stop the activities of smugglers from Libya. He indicated that the persecution against him was politically motivated and announced that he will go into the process with "highly raised head". In the meantime, the organization Open Arms enjoys the legal steps against Salvini and sees it as a key moment in the struggle for the rights of migrants.
