Budget crisis: FPÖ and ÖVP struggle for savings and reforms!

In the middle of intensive coalition negotiations between the FPÖ and ÖVP, the financial situation of Austria becomes the central topic. The negotiations focus on the urgently needed renovation of the budget. Wifo boss Gabriel Felbermayr commented in the ORF press hour and emphasized that in order to find a sustainable solution, tax measures are inevitable. "Only tax relief, reduced non -wage costs or corporation tax (...), this is not possible," he said. In this context, the need to avoid an EU deficit procedure was also emphasized, which according to Felbermayr, savings of 6.3 billion euros are necessary, as well as reported.

savings and reforms required

Felbermayr sees savings potential in promoting climate bonus and educational leave. Both measures could be classified as ineffectively, with the climate monus, according to Felbermayr, has no CO2-reducing effect. The new government also has to make sure to reach the climate goals by 2030 in order to avoid additional payments. A reform of the ground value tax and an increase in tobacco tax could be considered as further financing options. An increase in income tax for high earners is also being discussed. To make the pension system viable.

The coalition negotiations have so far been secret and without official feedback, while FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl has confirmed the basic values of the party, which are central positions in the current discussions, on various platforms. The government has until the next EU Minister Council on January 21 to present a plan for budget consolidation. Felbermayr concluded the words with the determination that a clear direction and efficiency in the implementation are essential to cope with the financial challenges of Austria.
