Tragic accident: 13-year-old cyclist dies after collision with a car

On the evening of July 2, 2025, a tragic traffic accident occurred in Upper Austria, in which a 13-year-old cyclist from the Welsland district was killed. The accident, which happened in the village of Linet around 6:45 p.m., occurred when the girl turned into the L1188 from a municipal road. At the same time, a 45-year-old car driver drove towards Linet on the L1188 and there was a collision between the bike and the car.

The immediate consequences of the accident were devastating. The cyclist was thrown over the bonnet of the vehicle and despite the resuscitation attempts through an emergency doctor, her life could not be saved. The public prosecutor has ordered an autopsy to clarify the exact circumstances and causes of the fatal accident. These tragic incidents not only overthrown the affected family into deep grief, but also also highlight the safety in road traffic.

accident statistics in Austria

Last year there were 349 traffic fatalities in Austria, which represents a decline of 13.2 % compared to 2023. In 2024, the number of traffic fatalities was even the second lowest since the beginning of the records in 1950. Nevertheless, every single death is a tragic memory of the dangers lurking in road traffic. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner refers to the important efforts of the police to improve traffic safety.

bicycle security and causes of the accident

The concern for the safety of cyclists is increasing, especially in view of the fact that in 2024 32 cyclists were to be complained about. According to the statistics, carelessness and distraction are the most common causes of fatal traffic accidents. These factors were decisive in 33.1 % of the cases. For the safety of cyclists, it remains important to raise awareness of traffic safety and to introduce suitable measures to prevent.

Despite the overall decline in racing dead, the situation for weaker road users such as cyclists and pedestrians remains worrying. In order to avoid such tragic accidents, education and traffic controls are of great importance. The increase in security standards on the streets could potentially help to save lives and to further reduce the number of accidents.

The events on July 2, 2025 once again illustrated the urgency, with which measures are required to improve traffic safety for all road users.
