Safe routes for everyone: DRIVE SLOWLY” on Mariahilfer Straße!

In the Innere Mariahilfer Straße in Vienna, the traffic flow is being redesigned to benefit pedestrians and cyclists. On November 26, 2025, the Viennese press reports on the introduction of “DRIVE SLOWLY” pictograms aimed at promoting mindfulness and consideration between these two groups. District leader Markus Reiter emphasizes the importance of safe transport routes for both children and families, especially given the tight spaces caused by subway construction work.

The new color markings are intended to provide orientation for both cyclists and pedestrians and avoid conflicts. According to Mobility City Councilor Sima, no driving ban for cyclists will be introduced on Mariahilfer Straße, as this route is an essential cycle path connection. Instead, a maximum walking speed of 5 km/h will be mandatory in the pedestrian zone. The police are asked to regularly check compliance with legal requirements.

Implementation and geographical details

The marking work will be carried out on Mariahilfer Straße in the coming months. However, the exact completion of this work depends on weather conditions. The concept envisages colored markings: blue areas for cyclists and yellow for pedestrians. In addition, the concrete guardrails of the construction site barrier will be colored blue and labeled with the message “DRIVE SLOWLY”, while light blue dots on the asphalt are intended to encourage cyclists to be mindful.

In principle, walking speeds of 5 km/h also apply to pedestrians in the pedestrian zone. From autumn 2026, a ban on driving e-mopeds on cycle paths and in pedestrian zones will come into force. NEOS mobility spokeswoman Angelika Pipal-Leixner supports the measures to unbundle traffic and emphasizes their importance for the safety of all road users.

Traffic calming and future plans

Most of Mariahilfer Straße will be closed to car traffic, especially the section between Karl-Schweighofer-Gasse and Kaiserstraße, which will remain accessible to both cyclists and delivery traffic. Residents receive special privileges to continue using vehicles with verifiable garage space. Public feedback is planned to evaluate possible crossing locations in the area, and bus routes will also be moved to updated routes to account for traffic-calmed areas.

Considering further traffic calming measures, the concept appears promising. Future projects could include pedestrian zones, meeting areas, 30 km/h zones and more to increase the quality of life in the neighboring districts of Mariahilf and Neubau. Criticism from the opposition, which calls for greater involvement of management and visitors, highlights the challenges that come with implementing such concepts.
