Snow chaos on the streets: Police stop drivers with 29 cm of snow!
Winter has covered Eastern Switzerland with amazing amounts of snow! On Friday morning, the Appenzell Ausserrhoden cantonal police took action and stopped seven vehicles that were traveling with a dangerous blanket of snow. Particularly noticeable was a driver whose car had up to 20 centimeters of snow on the roof. All affected drivers had to remove the layer of snow on site before they were allowed to continue their journey. The police announced that they would report the drivers because falling snow and ice can endanger other road users. According to the experts at today.at You can face fines of between 200 and 600 euros, and in serious cases even up to 2,000 euros.
But police checks were not only active in Appenzell: in St.Gallen, on the same day, the city police officers also stopped twelve vehicles that were insufficiently cleared of snow. The highest snow depth measured on one of these vehicles was 29 centimeters! All drivers also had to clean their cars before continuing their journey and were shown how Eastern Switzerland snow ticker reported. This was done as part of efforts to ensure safety on the snow-covered roads, especially after the massive winter onset that led to numerous traffic accidents in the region.
Winter challenges for drivers
Since the cold and snow arrived, there have been challenges in road traffic. Over 120 accidents were reported in St.Gallen and the cantonal police were on duty around the clock. In the city of Appenzell, however, there were only a few incidents, which shows that winter preparations went better there. However, the authorities warn that drivers must clear their vehicles of snow and ice before setting off to avoid accidents.
The winter has not only brought the roads to a standstill, but has also made people exercise caution. The police are appealing to all road users to be patient and prepare for the winter conditions - this applies to both drivers and pedestrians - in order to prevent accidents due to the slippery roads.
