Horror in New Orleans: Man drives truck into celebrating crowd!
In a shocking incident in New Orleans, a man used a pickup truck to target a crowd of people in the famous French Quarter on New Year's Eve, killing at least ten people. The attack occurred at 3:15 a.m. local time during New Year's Eve celebrations, reported Today. The authorities speak of a targeted act that apparently had the aim of “running over as many people as possible.” Police confirmed that the driver also fired at police officers, injuring two officers, before dying in his own accident.
Investigations are ongoing
The FBI has taken over the investigation and is checking whether an explosive device found at the crime scene can be detonated. Although it was initially suspected that it was not an act of terrorism, the FBI later stated that they were investigating the incident as a "terrorist act." ZDF reported. Eyewitnesses saw the horror scenes as the truck drove along several blocks at high speed, hitting motionless people.
The background to the attacker's motive is currently unclear. As New Orleans works to improve its security measures, bollards on Bourbon Street were recently replaced to help prevent such incidents in the future. Gov. Jeff Landry called the incident a “horrific act of violence” and urged citizens to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
