Vienna attracts refugees: high social benefits as a magnet!

Austria's pulse strike beats in Vienna, where almost 60 percent of the recognized refugees take place! Vienna attracts more than half of the refugees from other federal states, and the heart of the city beats higher - but unfortunately not for joy, but with challenges. According to a report by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) for 2023, Syrians in particular, including many young men with little education, are drawn to the Austrian capital. The movement from Upper Austria, Carinthia and Styria to Vienna has been increasing rapidly since 2018.

The reason for this? Vienna's well -filled social security funds! In the federal capital, around 62,500 asylum and subsidiary minimum security are obtained, which Vienna turns into a Mecca for social assistance. Here, a whopping 312.08 euros per child flow for every family with children. No wonder that the city is extremely attractive for newcomers. This generous social welfare attracts refugees like the light, especially large families benefit generously.

FPÖ in turmoil about Vienna's social strategy

This movement to Vienna does not go unnoticed. Dominik Nepp, the head of the Viennese FPÖ, does not save criticism. His words are sharp as the knife of a executioner: "Vienna is no longer a catch basin, but a magnet for social asylum seekers!" By October 2024, 21,532 people in Austria received a positive asylum notice, mostly Syrian, followed by Afgans and Somaliern. The minimum security, once intended as a security network for Austrians in need, mutates into a permanent income for those who take advantage of the system.

But the numbers speak for themselves: three quarters of the 86,400 minimum security recipients across Austria live in Vienna. This flood of newcomers shakes the foundations of the city, whose health insurers and integration can hardly withstand the growing challenges. Vienna stands in the area of tension between the welcome culture and the threat of collapse of the social security funds - a situation that is hot as a Viennese schnitzel in the pan.
