Christmas crisis atmosphere: traffic light parties in front of unsolvable dilemma!

Oberösterreich, Österreich - A Christmas peace seems to be unreachable in Austrian politics. Negotiations between the parties ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos are complicated and far from an agreement. According to Austria, the parties are faced with profound differences in central areas such as business, taxes and budget. While the ÖVP is pushing for relief for companies, the SPÖ wants new income to renovate the dilapidated budget- in particular through inheritance and millionaire taxes. However, it contradicts the ÖVP's election promises that do not want to introduce new taxes. The NEOS in turn can be found in a difficult situation, since they have to give up many of their reform proposals as the possible attachment of a grand coalition, such as Kleine Zeitung reported.

On Friday, the negotiation teams from ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS are to define a consolidation path for the desolate state budget, whereby a consolidation volume between 15 and 24 billion euros will be discussed by 2028. However, the political groups disagree on whether the renovation should take place over four or seven years and whether an EU deficit procedure is considered. If no agreement is reached, this would be a first serious sign of a crisis in the negotiations. The declared goal is to create financial scope as quickly as possible, but different views of savings of new income are opposed to this, such as Austria noted.

The NEOS also call for concrete lighthouse projects that are intended to illustrate the orientation of the government. They not only want to be fed up with mere marketing strategies, but also want to see real structural changes from which the population benefits. If these claims are not met, it could be difficult for the NEOS to be perceived as part of a triple coalition. In the meantime, some governors such as the Upper Austrian Thomas Stelzer are in a hurry and demand tangible results, since the uncertainty about future budgets also affects the federal states.
