New departure in Syria: Fighters are striving for peace and stability!

After the fall of the Dictator Bashar al-Assad, which fled to Moscow, the situation in Syria has changed dramatically. In the last 48 hours, Israel has carried out over 300 air strikes on Syrian territory, as reported. The Israeli military takes advantage of uncertainty in Syria to strengthen its military presence and push back Iran. This happens, among other things, through attacks on chemical arms camps that have led to the release of poison gas in the Syrian population.

military escalations and new balance of power

The Israeli armed forces also penetrate soil troops in Syrian territory. According to Geir Pedersen, the UN special envoy for Syria, this aggressive strategy violates the 1974 unbreaking agreement between Israel and Syria. In the meantime, the rebel groups in the country try to maintain public order and to secure control. According to political scientist Kristin Helberg, this is a crucial moment after the Syrians have completed their 2011 revolution.

The question remains which future Syria is now expecting. With the fall of the Assad regime, there are new players, including the Hajat Tahrir al-Scham (HTS) group, led by Muhammad Al-Jaulani, a former al-Qaida leader. HTS has established itself and pursues a policy of moderation that is supposed to respect different religious groups. Nevertheless, the uncertainty remains high as to whether a stable democratic order can develop or whether a new, brutal regime arises. The immediate reaction of the international community and the influence of external actors such as Russia, Iran and the United States will be crucial to ensure the future stability of Syria, such as Deutschlandfunk.de
