Moldau chooses Russian influence: victory for pro-European politician!

The Moldovan President Maia Sandu is now officially in office after triumphant with over 55 percent of the vote in the runoff election in November. However, your choice was overshadowed by allegations of massive influence by Russia. Sandu prevailed against the Russian -friendly candidate Alexandr Stoianoglu, with numerous attacks and attempts at destabilization, both in the first ballot on October 20 and in the runoff election, such as the Kleine Zeitung reported. The challenge that Sandu now has to cope is in the security of the country that borders on Ukraine and has been afraid of his own independence since the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

EU accession negotiations and geopolitical tensions

The new presidency is in a geopolitically tense context. After the invasion of Russia in Ukraine in 2022, the Republic of Moldova applied for accession to the European Union, and the talks began in June 2023. These steps should support the European integration of the country and take the Russian influence, which also with the events of the orangen Revolution in the Ukraine 2004. This revolution was a reaction to widespread counterfeits and led to massive protests that, like the current developments in Moldau, demonstrated a strong commitment to European orientation.

With the parallel challenges in Ukraine and Moldova, it becomes clear that the geopolitical ambitions of Russia are encountered. The orange revolution, an important moment that was a bloodloody turn in Ukrainian politics, has left significant effects in the history of the region. The intentions of the western powers to support these uprisings in order to limit Moscow's influence in Eastern Europe remains relevant today.
