Burgenland fights for animal welfare: ban on full column floors is imminent!

The Burgenland state government under Governor Hans Peter Doskozil has initiated an important step towards animal welfare by deciding on a constitutional complaint with the Constitutional Court (VfGH) against the attitude of cattle on full column floors. This happens after the success of a similar advance for ban on pig farming, which the Krone reported. Doskozil argued that the existing regulation, which only excludes a few types of cattle from this form of husbandry, was not sufficient. "If the federal legislature assumes that some animals may not be kept on full -split floors due to the increased risk of diseases, then this must also apply to the same animals if they are not used for breeding," he said.

New model for agriculture

In order to support the farmers in this transition, the state government is planning a new funding model to alleviate the cancellation of the mother cow premium. The aim is to strengthen regional cattle breeding and prevent agonizing animal transports. While politics takes into account the concerns of farmers, it also emphasizes the need to end the suffering of the animals. The orf reported that a ban on full column floors in pig farming should already come into force for the next year and a further approach to the form of posture for cattle is planned.

The concern for the economic consequences for the farmers is in the room, because many see their existence threatened by new regulations. "You have to understand the fears and worries of the farmers," said a animal welfare representative, "but the life of these animals also counts." While the government is trying to find a balance between animal welfare and agricultural interests, Doskozil promises to continue to pursue matter and, if necessary, take new legal steps to ensure clear conditions.
