Change of the distribution of mandate: Greens lose seat in the Vorarlberg Federal Council
After the Vorarlberg state election, the composition of the Federal Council has changed. One of the three Vorarlberg mandates changes from the Greens to the FPÖ, while the other two mandates stay with the ÖVP. The Greens now only have five mandates, while the ÖVP with 25 mandates is still the strongest parliamentary group in the Federal Council. The SPÖ has 18 mandates, the FPÖ has 11 mandates and the Neos have a mandate.
This change means that neither the ÖVP and the Greens nor the ÖVP and the FPÖ have a majority in the Federal Council. However, the ÖVP and the SPÖ have a majority of 43 mandates, while the ÖVP and the FPÖ hold 36 mandates together.
The Federal Council is the upper house of the Austrian Parliament and consists of 60 members. The members are sent by the state parliament and their composition changes after each state election. The next state election will take place on November 24, 2024 in Styria, followed by the election on January 19, 2025 in Burgenland.
This change in the Federal Council has an impact on the political landscape of Austria and the cooperation between the various parties. It remains to be seen how this new constellation will affect political decision -making.
