Election campaign in the Weiz district: Who will be the next mayor?

In the Styrian state elections, there is a dramatic upheaval in the Weiz district: the FPÖ triumphs with 36 percent of the vote, which means a remarkable increase in 18.5 percentage points. The Freedom Party thus overtakes the ÖVP, which only reaches 33.7 percent and thus loses 8.3 percentage points, while the SPÖ drops by 5.5 points with 17.4 percent. The preliminary result thus shows a clear power relationship, which differs significantly from the last election in 2019, where the ÖVP was still increasing with 42 percent. This result reveals the high dissatisfaction with the current political situation, such as

The situation in the city of Weiz is particularly booming, where the SPÖ remains 31.9 percent despite a loss of 9.5 points. Mayor Ingo Reisinger is concerned about the high minus and emphasizes that the values for the SPÖ do not reflect the expected result. There is a similar picture in the neighboring community of Sinabelkirchen, where the FPÖ achieves the absolute majority with an impressive 50.8 percent and thus puts ÖVP Mayor Emanuel Pfeifer into a difficult situation. "This is of course a bitter result," says the local chief, while the FPÖ is pleased about the election victory, which, due to their choice of theme and the high number of votes on Tuesday, March 13, 2025, leads to a political turn, as reports.

The new political landscape

The upcoming municipal elections promise tension because the political balance of power could be redistributed. On the electoral alliance, the pressure is now to convince the voters from their points of view. In Weiz, Mayor Ingo Reisinger again competes as a candidate for the SPÖ, while other parties such as the Greens and the NEOS have already consolidated their top candidates. The previously cooperating “Team Krottendorf” members separate and now compete separately-a sign of the lukewarm political mood in the district. In Gleisdorf, too, the ÖVP and their candidates try to defend the absolute majority, while the Greens hope to win more votes in this region. The new challenges in the communities indicate that the political landscape could be turned upside down, which promises further discourse and disputes.
