Potsdam: Papenbrock surprisingly fails in the SPD election battle!

The SPD in Brandenburg has experienced a significant change in the political landscape. At the last state representative meeting in Potsdam, two important developments took place: Olaf Scholz was again nominated as the top candidate for the federal election and Bundestag member Maja Wallstein won in a competitive election against her party colleague Wiebke Papenbrock for the coveted second place on the SPD state list.

Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor, received an impressive 90.8 percent of the vote and is therefore ready to run again in the Potsdam constituency - an area he already won in 2021 against Green Party politician Annalena Baerbock. The election went smoothly overall, but the competition for places on the list showed that there are also tensions within the party. Wallstein clearly prevailed in the candidacy with 105 votes, while Papenbrock was only able to gather 18 delegates behind him Daily Mirror reported.

Strong voices within the SPD

The SPD state leader Dietmar Woidke encouraged the delegates not to give up despite unfavorable polls. This is particularly important for the party, which is behind the AfD and CDU in the current polls. He emphasized that the upcoming elections have not yet been decided and called for people to fight together and campaign with commitment. In fact, according to an Insa survey, the SPD is only at 17 percent, while the CDU is at 31 percent Märkische Allgemeine noted.

The nomination of Wallstein and Scholz shows a determined face of the Brandenburg SPD as it prepares for the upcoming challenges in the elections. In an attempt to clarify, General Secretary David Kolesnyk called for people not to fight over places on the list, but rather to win the constituencies directly - a clear message that is intended to underline the cohesion of the party.
