Greenland chooses: change of power and independence in your sights!
The voters decided in the highly expected parliamentary elections in Greenland: the opposition center-right party democratite achieved 29.9 percent of the vote and is committed to gradual approximation to the independence of Denmark. The rival party Naleraq, which demands faster independence, received 24.5 percent. This result means a significant increase for democratite, which had only reached 9.1 percent in the last elections in 2021. According to the final results, the governing parties inuit Ataqatigiit and Siumut have lost support in support, from 66.1 percent four years ago to only 36 percent of this election. The election process, in which around 40,500 of a total of 57,000 Greenlanders took part, was attended internationally.
The choice of US President Donald Trump to Greenland was particularly explosive. Despite Trump's demands that the United States would "get Greenland on one way or the other", according to a survey, 85 percent of the Greenlanders refuse to belong to the United States. The current Prime Minister Mute Eggede had repeatedly criticized Trump as unpredictable and explained that people expect more economic opportunities for Greenland instead of becoming independent immediately. Democratite chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen confirmed that they wanted to work towards a solid economic basis for possible independence. The election outcome also indicates that Greenland could work more towards independence under the new government.geopolitical tensions and future prospects
The geopolitical tensions around Greenland are increasing. In the past few months, Greenland has been brought into focus from Trump because climate change makes more and more soil resources accessible. For the first time since 1940, the United States is increasingly offering common business interests, which presents the Greenlanders before new decisions. In the election, however, there was a clear rejection against a connection to the United States, while demand for more self -determination is growing. Many supporters of Naleraq and democratite are urging independence, which is highly challenged by economic dependencies to Denmark.
Voters set a sign on Tuesday and the political landscape in Greenland could change drastically. The coming weeks will be decisive, especially in the question of how fast and to what extent Greenland will take its way to complete independence, especially in the face of the United States and the interests of Trump, such as Merkur reported.
