Two firefighters injured: deflection in the sports center in Vienna!

On May 1, 2025, serious deflection occurred in a sports center in Vienna during fire fighting. The emergency call was discontinued at 8:30 a.m., whereupon the Vienna professional fire brigade was alerted. When they arrived at Bernoullistraß in the 22nd district, the gym was heavily smoked and the emergency services were faced with the challenge of searching the building for possibly present persons.

The firefighters used two extinguishing pipes under respiratory protection. Shortly after entering the property, however, the deflection occurred. This resulted in two firefighters of a respiratory protection squad to the ground and injured. Window panes, including a panoramic pane, were pressed out of their anchoring and the room was on fire while the flames hit the facade to the roof.

injuries and fire brigade measures

After the deflection, the injured firefighters were immediately handed over to the teams of the Vienna career rescue. Other fire brigade teams then took over the extinguishing pipes and fought against the fire from both inside and from the outside. High -performance fans were used to eliminate the incoming smoke. A total of 42 firefighters and nine vehicles were in use until 10:30 a.m.

The Vienna career rescue supervised a total of three people during this missions, two of them were the injured firefighters. The incident is currently being examined by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, whereby the cause of the fire is still being determined.

contest to fire protection

The incident in Vienna is particularly interested in the context of current static developments in fire protection. According to the Center for Fire Statistics of the CFIF (CFS-CTIF), reports on world fire statistics have been published annually since 1995. Report No. 28, which was released in 2023, comprises data from 38 states and 26 major cities. He also analyzes the causes of fire in 66 countries and deals with the risks that occur in urban centers.

The project "100 Cities - 100 Years" also examines the development of urban fire risks over the last century. Political, cultural and technical events have significantly influenced fire protection, whereby important questions about the number of fires recorded and the number of victims are discussed. The data collected offers valuable insights into the problem of dealing with fires in cities.

The tragedy in Vienna is therefore not only a locally limited incident, but also reflects larger trends in the field of security and fire protection in urban areas. The continuous development of fire protection strategies is crucial to avoid such incidents in the future.
