Zarit's new ÖVP boss: Reform process started according to the election fiasco!
Burgenland, Österreich - Today Christoph Zarits was announced as the new state party chairman of the ÖVP Burgenland. The election took place on Saturday in the state party executive, where Zarits and his predecessor Christian Sagartz were unanimously agreed. Bernd Strobl was also voted the new club chairman in the state parliament club without a vote. Both successors succeed Christian Sagartz, who had already signaled in February that a change at the party leadership should go hand in hand with a reform process.
The reform process in the state party was necessary after the ÖVP received only 22 percent of the vote in the state election in January. This was a decline of 8.6 percentage points compared to the previous elections and led to the fact that the ÖVP behind the SPÖ and FPÖ landed in third place. The need for changes was therefore obvious.
The way to the official election
The official election of Christoph Zarits as party leader will take place in the coming party conference after the summer. The board meeting for the election of the new chairman was originally scheduled for April 10, but had to be canceled due to schedule.
The decision for Zarits and Strobl could possibly be a turning point for the ÖVP Burgenland. According to the disappointing election results, it is crucial that the party looks with a fresh leadership style and clear reforms into the future.
The challenges that the ÖVP is facing are clearly defined. The loss of votes and the position in political competition require quick action and a clear course. The coming months will show whether Zarits and Strobl are able to successfully implement the necessary changes.
