The development of mobile applications for travel has increased dramatically in recent years. Mobile technologies have strongly influenced the entire tourism experience. A look at the market reveals that the value for mobile travel applications has tripled in the past five years and that in 2023 exceeded over $ 1.2 billion. Over 40 percent of this market is represented by the USA, followed by China.
trends in the mobile travel market
An investigation of the most popular travel apps worldwide in 2023 shows that Booking.com, Airbnb and Agoda are at the top. In the United States, Airbnb, Expedia and VRBO are particularly popular, followed by Hopper and Booking.com. Mobile bookings have proven to be significantly more profitable-for Booking Holdings they generated almost $ 11 billion in 2023, which underlines the importance of mobile use.
Nevertheless, the mobile travel market remains with a challenge: Around two thirds of traffic on global travel websites come from mobile devices, but less than three percent of mobile visitors actually conclude a booking. This means that the conversion rate on the desktop is almost three times the mobile rate. The observations thus show that despite high attention when planning the travel by mobile devices, the booking rates are rather low.
