Viennese lines: Austria's pioneer in e-mobility and climate protection!
The Viennese lines have received an important award today: The Austrian Administrative Prize 2025 was awarded to their e-mobility center in seven-shields. The price that is awarded by the Federal Chancellery is in the category "Ecological Sustainability, Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection" and recognizes innovative approaches in the public sector. Over 100 submissions were evaluated and the e-mobility center convinced the jury with its sustainable concept.
The e-mobility center has been the home of 60 e-buses from the Viennese lines since 2024. Here the vehicles are loaded, serviced and repaired. Particularly noteworthy is the construction of the building: parts of which are made of wood, while the roofs and side surfaces are greened. The environmentally friendly photovoltaic system, which supplies the location with electricity, also shows the engagement for sustainable energy generation. In addition, the waste heat of the charging systems is used to heat the lounge and workshops.
sustainability certificates and positive feedback
The e-mobility center has already received the climate-active gold certificate, the highest quality sign for sustainable buildings in Austria. Alexandra Reinagl, the Chairman of the Wiener Linien, was pleased with the recognition and sees the award as confirmation of long -term commitment to climate protection and environmentally friendly mobility.
In the broader context of the mobility turn, it becomes clear how important projects such as this are to reduce CO2 emissions. Transport and logistics cause globally over 5.5 % of CO2 emissions, which illustrates the need for sustainable solutions. The "Sustainable Network Design" project of the Fraunhofer IML examines how sustainability and resilience can be integrated into the strategic planning of logistics networks. The aim is to develop new methodologies that help companies reduce emissions and at the same time make their networks more stable.
pioneering work for municipalities and public space
In view of the sustainable mobility transition, municipalities play a central role. They are in direct contact with the citizens: inside and can actively shape the public space. The focus is on reducing traffic and promoting the use of environmentally friendly means of transport. The Austrian Federal Environment Agency supports local actors with short studies on relevant topics such as the redistribution of public spaces and urban logistics. These studies help to enable international knowledge and experience transfers, which makes it considerably easier to implement sustainable projects. In summary, it can be seen that innovative projects such as the E-Mobility Center of the Wiener Linien, in combination with strategic research on the logistics of Fraunhofer IML and the municipal initiatives of the Federal Environment Agency, creates an effective concept for promoting the sustainable mobility change.Details | |
