Viennese students suffer from housing costs: Green demand urgent solutions!
Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - The living situation in Vienna is becoming increasingly precarious for students. As the Greens Vienna and the Gras Vienna found at a press conference on February 17, 2025, access to their own shared apartment has become unaffordable for many students. Party chairman Judith Pühringer pointed out that current studies show that 43 percent of the monthly budget for housing costs must be raised. In private tenancy, this burden is even higher, with 49 percent. The rising rental prices catapulting many students into financial imbalance.
The results of an IFES survey, which was commissioned by the Chamber of Labor, are particularly alarming. On average, students spend 555 euros per month for their accommodation. The study also shows that 60 percent of those surveyed live in fixed -term tenancy. They force these contracts over 16 months to bond, which significantly limits their flexibility. The pressure is growing because 68 percent have to work next to his studies to cover their rising housing costs, as the Chamber of Labor reports.5-point program for relief
In order to counteract this housing cost crisis, the Greens presented a 5-point package. Among other things, this includes a housing deposit fund that is supposed to reduce the financial hurdle when looking for living space. In addition, students under the age of 30 should have access to the community building, regardless of their previous main residence. The green housing benefit should offer further support, while the dormitories also have to be made more attractive in order to meet the needs of the students. Georg Prack, spokesman for the Green Vienna residential spokesman, emphasizes that these measures are necessary to fix the social imbalance of the students who suffer from the rapidly increasing inflation.
The demands for an offensive in the subsidized residential building and a resumption of the federal student center funding of the federal government are therefore crucial to noticeably improve the life situation of the students, as the Chamber of Labor and the ÖH demand. These developments throw a light on the urgent need to defuse the financial pressure situation for students in Vienna.
