Wiedner Hauptstraße: green shine and new quality of life for Vienna

The Wiedner Hauptstraße in Vienna received a fresh look after intensive renovation work and was officially opened on Thursday, November 28th. The transformation is part of a larger project that drives the goals of the city administration "out of the asphalt". The prominent guests at the opening included district leader Lea Halbwidl as well as mobility and economic councilor Ulli Sima and Peter Hanke from the SPÖ. Together they celebrated the end of this important project.

The renovation measures stretched over a distance of 1.2 kilometers between Karlsplatz and Trappelgasse. Particular attention was paid to the new two-direction bike path, which is already used by many cyclists. This new element closes important gaps in the city's existing cycle traffic network and improves the connection to other bike paths.

important innovations and greening

In addition to the bike paths, new green areas were also created. A total of eleven new trees and 1,300 square meters of new greening are added, with the number of beds being increased to around 130. The conversions not only promote local recreation, but also help to improve the city climate. For pedestrians there are now wider sidewalks and around 700 square meters of space were sealed by seepage -capable paving surfaces, which contributes to improving water absorption into the earth.

The Viennese lines played a key role in these redesign work because they had to make the necessary track renewals. This work was completed on Saturday, November 30th, so that tram lines 1, 62 and Badner Bahn can go regularly and head for important stops.

"The innovations of public transport are not only a question of transport, but also improve the quality of life in the city," said Hanke City Councilor. Around 8.5 million euros were invested in the expansion, which is well received by passengers. More than 25,000 people use this traffic axis every day.

The new stops are not only barrier-free, but also modernized and equipped with e-paper ads that provide information about departure times. These measures should offer users a pleasant waiting time and contribute to the attractiveness of public transport.

Another aspect of the redesign was that numerous citizens were included in the planning process. Around 1,900 feedback from the population flowed into the redesign of Wiedner Hauptstraße. District chief Halb -Widl emphasized the importance of citizen participation and said: "With new stays, drinking fountains and seating we have made the Wiedner Hauptstraße more worth living."

Although many citizens are positive about the redesign, there were also critical voices, especially with regard to the lost parking space. At the ceremonial opening, it was clearly noticeable that this topic deals with some residents. Sima found that the public space should now also be available for other uses and not just for cars. "Public life has changed," she said, pointing out that many people do not own a car or use car sharing.

In view of the many innovations on Wiedner Hauptstraße, it remains exciting to observe how citizens will get used to the changes over time. The new design is intended to help adapt the urban habitat in Vienna to the needs of today.
