European arrest warrant threatens: Search for fleeting prisoners from Vienna

The police in Vienna has been in use since October 14th to find a refugee prisoner from the Forensic-Therapeutic Center Mittersteig. The 19-year-old, who was previously in the rest of Europe due to a one-year prison sentence and mental illnesses, could soon also be sought in the rest of Europe. According to reports, he was able to escape through a construction site grille and a scaffolding and has been on the run since then.

For over a week, the investigators have been in the process of spreading photographs of the young man in order to obtain information from the public. The police have set up a hotline under which citizens can report possible information. So far, however, the fleeting has not been caught, and the police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger emphasized that the search measures last.

European arrest warrant in the prospect

The precise place of residence of the prisoner is unknown. If the case is developing, a European arrest warrant could be issued. At the moment, the man is only advertised in Austria due to his escape. The Ministry of Justice states that it should not be long before the search is expanded to other European countries.

Since the man was derived from the prison, the responsible prison court of the State Court wants to decide for criminal matters in Vienna whether a European arrest warrant should be issued. Everything indicates that this could happen soon. The court will also determine the scope of the search to ensure that the man is hunted comprehensively.

The situation raises questions about security and the procedures in dealing with forensic prisoners. While the police are still looking for the 19-year-old, hope for soon education is swinging among the population.
