Alarming: Problems at Vienna's schools and the voice of Christian Klar
in Vienna, schools are under enormous pressure. The lack of personnel and the difficult conditions under which teachers have to work ensure a tense atmosphere in the classrooms. In October, the compulsory school teachers went back to the streets to draw attention to their worrying situation. In the middle of these challenges, the Floridsdorf middle school director Christian Klar published a book that deals with the current problems in schools.
In the presentation of the book in the Thalia-Wien Mitte, clearly presented the alarming conditions in the schools. An example that he gave is the case of an Afghan who was still in the first class of middle school at the age of 13. Despite his suspension, he was put into a special project instead of receiving the necessary support to change his behavior. Clearly also reported a Chechens who finally fought for IS in Syria after several fights. These stories are a clear signal for the author that something urgently needs to be changed.
rising numbers and problems in schools
Clearly observes an alarming increase in crime in schools. The latest statistics from the Ministry of the Interior show that the number of crimes rose from 962 to 1932 between 2021 and 2023. The increase in attacks that almost doubled from 289 to 722 is particularly worrying. In order to prevent such incidents, a cell phone ban clearly introduced in his school after a violent incident shook the school community for an injuring Facebook post.
Another point that is clearly worried is the Islamic character of many students. A current survey shows that 35 percent of students in elementary schools have an Islamic confession of religion. In the middle schools, this proportion is even 47.6 percent. These figures clarify that the structure of the schools has changed significantly, which is also due to the social framework.
language and integration
The language barriers are a central problem. More than a third of the first graders in Vienna cannot take part in regular lessons due to inadequate knowledge of German. Many of these children are born in Austria or have already visited a kindergarten. In his book, clearly describes that communication between children from different nationalities often does not take place because many do not speak German at home. Instead, they mainly consume content on social media that do not contribute to integration.
A solution that clearly suggests is a ban on Islamic symbols in schools and a basic course in Islamic religious teaching for teachers and other professional groups. He emphasizes the need to establish clear guidelines in order to create a positive school environment in which all students are respected. These proposals are part of his demands on politics to finally tackle the grievances in schools.
Today's students are the Society of Tomorrow, and it is crucial that we create a positive and beneficial learning environment for them. Christian Klar does not only ask questions, but also provides answers and appeals to the crucial places to secure the training of our next generation.
