Comeback of Thursday demos in Vienna: protest in front of the university
The Thursday demonstrations are back! After a long break for over a year and in the course of the recent election victory of the FPÖ, the “Thursday” initiative has revived the tradition of the demos. The last major protest took place at 6 p.m., this time at the University of Vienna, after a short -term route change occurred due to the parallel events. The number of participants was given with impressive 5,000 to 10,000 people before the start.
The protest actions have a deeply rooted story that goes back to 2000 when the first major mobilization against a coalition of ÖVP and FPÖ took place. These new demos have emerged in response to the current political course and the trend towards a stronger FPÖ government. The organizers and participants were motivated and expected a great encouragement.
The atmosphere and extraordinary support
In front of the university, the Schottentor quickly filled with people, and the expected movements attracted numerous demonstrators around 6.30 p.m. Numerous well-known anti-right initiatives, including "Grandmas against the right" and members of the Greens, joined the demonstration, which increased the image of a united resistance to political developments in Austria.
The originally planned route, which was to lead from Parliament via Neustiftgasse to Schottenfeldgasse, could not be observed because a spell mile was set up around the parliament. Instead, the demo moved through the inner city, past the opera and along the ring. This time the dynamics of the protest was documented by the technical use of images and videos, which gave an important insight into what is happening on site.
The organizers who calculated with the great encouragement before the demo made it clear that the future continuation of Thursday demos will depend on how the coalition talks run. It remains to be seen how politics reacts to this massive protest, which is not only a sign of dissatisfaction, but also a call to everyone interested in actively involved in political discussions. The complete impressions and other videos of this impressive protest campaign can be viewed on various platforms.
