Vienna relies on sustainable procurement: a step towards climate neutrality!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - The city of Vienna continues to advance with the “Ökokauf Vienna” program and sets decisive accents for sustainable and environmentally friendly procurement. Since 1998, the city has successfully bought products and services regionally and ecologically, which means annual savings of around 15,000 tons of CO2 equivalents. Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasizes that this corresponds to a reforestation of an entire beech forest that has the same area as the Viennese district of Hernals. The new program period from 2025 to 2027 will concentrate on the further development of criteria for climate-friendly procurement, such as smartcity.gv.at

important measures for a green future

The city of Vienna is investing around five billion euros annually in the procurement of goods and services. This immense sum exceeds the expenditure of all Viennese households for apartment, nutrition and clothing. The procurement guidelines demand environmentally friendly products from suppliers, including those without dangerous chemicals such as PVC or chlorine bleach. In addition, the proportion of biological products in food in public institutions is continuously increased, which has already reached over 50 percent, especially in kindergartens. This shows the clear direction that the city has taken with "Ökokauf Vienna", such as ots.at emphasized.

In addition, new standards for the circular economy are developed as part of the program, which increases the focus on building and civil engineering as well as building technology. Andreas Januskovecz, head of the climate affairs, explains that "Ökokauf Vienna" has a significant impact on the reduction of emissions and that the city of Vienna as a sustainable procurer plays a key role in achieving climate goals. With the amendment of the climate law, the legal basis for sustainable procurement is also strengthened and Vienna is further expanded into the pioneer of environmentally friendly urban development.
