New police center in Mühlhausen: gentle architecture for security
in Mühlhausen in the Täle, the Stuttgart architecture firm Yonder built a new building for the motorway police, which is characterized by an unobtrusive but modern design. Instead of relying on striking designs, the architects decided to create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere that does justice to a current and youthful image of the police in the 21st century.
The new building includes an expansion of the existing traffic commissioner, which is located directly on the A8 motorway. The adjustments were necessary to provide additional administrative rooms as well as workshops and garages. Yonder expanded the massive gable roof construction from the 1950s to add the attached, smaller gable roof houses and at the same time added a modern office seal. This architecture effectively uses the central courtyard, which connects all areas. The external appearance of the building partly hides the actual use, since the gable facades of the adjacent garages and workshops are closed. This creates a certain privacy for the police and ensures that the neighboring children cannot simply get an idea of the inner events.
interior and materials
The external appearance of the building is noticeable by a white glazed floor and lid formwork. The artistic design of the vertical joints comes from the artist Florina Leinß. In contrast to the reserved facade, the interior of the office building is presented in lively colors. The architects combined a visible solid wood construction with strong colors and an elegant anthracite -colored steel staircase. This leads to a roof terrace that offers an impressive view of the Albtrauf. A robust concrete stone floor dominates on the ground floor, while the upper floor is designed with moss -green linoleum.
The garages and workshops have been implemented in wooden frame construction and have asymmetrical roofs. These are equipped with photovoltaic elements on the south side that create environmentally friendly energy. On the north side, translucent double wall sheets use a pleasant, glare -free lighting. The construction work was completed in 2023, and the old existing building is currently being renovated. There the former garages are converted into offices, with technical renewal in the foreground. The landscape design, which was taken over by Peyker landscape architecture from Schönaich, has not yet been completed.
The order to Yonder came from an award procedure, whereby the state company acts assets and construction of Baden-Württemberg as the client. The costs for the installation and new building, which comprises a gross area of around 860 square meters, amounts to around 3.5 million euros. This investment in modern architecture and sustainable design is not only shown in the creation of new infrastructure, but also in a fresh picture of the police, which takes into account the challenges of the 21st century.
