Security investments for Vienna's U-Strab: Four million for new technology
For the safety of passengers in the Vienna underground street stations, a remarkable investment package is put together. A total of four million euros will flow into a new security concept that was presented on Tuesday, October 8th, at the Eichenstrasse station. Mayor Michael Ludwig, the public councilor Peter Hanke and the district leader of Margareten, Silvia Janković, took part in this event.
The Viennese lines have decided to equip the stops of lines 1, 6, 18, 62 and Badner Bahn with the latest technology in order to reduce the security concerns of the citizens. In the coming years, a total of 142 cameras will be installed at five important stations. This happens in a period from 2025 to 2029, whereby the work at the Eichenstrasse station begins.
technological measures to improve security
The selected stations - Eichenstraße, Matzleinsdorfer Platz, Kliebergasse, Laurenzgasse and Blechturmgasse - are not only equipped with cameras, but also barrier -free emergency call systems are also introduced. These ensure that passengers can be connected to the control center immediately in an emergency to receive quick help.
The cameras will record the action in the stops, including elevators and stairs. The video material remains saved for 48 hours before it is automatically deleted, unless the police need it to clarify an incident. A two -meter -high fence is also built at the Eichenstrasse station between the tracks to create additional security.
Again every day, around 60,000 passengers use the U-Strab stations, and the Viennese lines assume that the number of passengers will increase with the current construction projects in the area. In order to continue to ensure this security, City Councilor Hanke emphasizes: "The safe operation of public transport has a top priority for us." He sees the investments as a key to keeping the Viennese lines up to date with the latest technology in the future.
The last comprehensive renovation of the U-Strab stops took place between 2009 and 2012. This time around 18 million euros were invested to increase the standard and accessibility of the stops. District head Janković emphasizes that the new measures are directly related to the concerns of the residents and strengthen their feeling of security.
An important aspect of the new entrepreneurial commitment is cooperation with local institutions such as the police, Caritas and Streetwork to guarantee a safe environment for all passengers. This integrative approach, coupled with technical support, is intended to ensure that the Viennese can rely on the safety of the U-Strab.
Future developments in the city center and adjacent areas promise to further increase the use of public transport. The quality of security will certainly also be a decisive factor for passengers. Information about the current measures and their progress are on www.meinbezirk.at to be found.
