Stones of memory: New memorial for Jewish Nazi victims in Leopoldstadt
In a significant step towards the culture of remembrance, four “stones of memory” and a plaque were ceremoniously unveiled in front of the Uniqua Center in Leopoldstadt. These initiatives contribute to recalling the fate of 56 Jewish victims of National Socialism and are part of the "path of memory", a valuable initiative of the "Steine of Memory".
The ceremony took place in the presence of high -ranking representatives, including Roswitha Hammer and Daliah Hindler from the club, as well as René Knapp, a board member of the Uniqa Group. A plaque was attached to the Lower Donaustrasse 27, the location of the memorial places, which keeps the memory of the terrible story alive.
The importance of the memorials
The memorial places set up draw attention to the tragic life stories of the 56 Jewish people, which once lived in the adjacent houses of Lower Donaustraße 23, 25 and 27 and were later deported into economic abysses as well as in the National Socialist extermination camp. These sacred memories are an important sign against forgetting and repeating such atrocities.
The support from Uniqa underlines the company's commitment to process history at its location. René Knapp explained that this measure is not only part of its long -term efforts, but also reflects its self -image as an international company, which is decisively positioned against any form of exclusion, racism and violence. This is done in addition to the existing memorial, the "name storm", which is reminiscent of the anniversary of the so -called "Reichspogromnacht".
The historical and biographical classification of these memorial was realized by the historians Albena Zlatanova and Wolfgang Gasser, who worked on behalf of the "National Fund of the Republic of Austria to commemorate the victims of National Socialism" under the direction of Hannah Lessing. Your contribution is essential to correctly document the events and the associated human destinies and convey to posterity.
