New art center: Atelier Augarten is revitalized

A new chapter for the Augarten studio in Vienna/Leopoldstadt was announced. The previously vacant building, which was built in 1950, is to be converted into a lively center for contemporary art and culture in the coming years. This was presented on Monday, November 18, by the Austria Center for the Business as part of a press conference.

The location, which is located between the Augarten and the corner of Scherzergasse/Lampigass, is currently being revitalized and should not only house changing exhibitions in the future, but also offer the ARIK BRAUER MUSEUM a permanent place.

a place for creative projects

The studio will be used in the future with various projects, the duration of which is not determined. Burghauptmann Reinhold Sahl explained that a special advisory board of experts in art, cultural, science and educational landscape was used to select and evaluate the projects.

Danielle Spera, the cultural manager and former director of the Jewish Museum Vienna, will lead this committee. It emphasizes that users of the studio who plan projects will pay a certain contribution contribution, which gives minor initiatives the opportunity to use the space for a shorter time. The idea behind it is to preserve the public character of the studio.

A central feature of the studio will be the “arik brewer lounge”. Here the works of the famous artist Arik Brauer, which are currently in his private villa in Währing, are to be exhibited here. Timna Brauer, his daughter, who is responsible for the administration of the estate, will significantly participate in the design of this exhibition.

renovation and costs

The planned overall renovation of the studio building should cost up to five million euros. The decision about the start of the work depends on the still unclear financial situation. Nevertheless, it is intended to start the renovation work at the beginning of next year. These are carried out in several construction phases, so that parts of the area may be made available for events earlier.

The announcement that the Aularten studio should be converted into a new cultural hotspot has already caused a lot of interest. The further developments remain to be seen while the studio is preparing to present a wide range of art and culture.
