Reminder remains alive: Four new stumbling blocks in the Josefstadt
In the Josefstadt there was recently a significant gesture of commemoration. Four new stumbling blocks were installed to commemorate the victims of the Nazi era. These monuments are not only a sign of respect, but also a way to process the dark chapters of history and not be forgotten. It is essential to deal with the mistakes of the past to pull the teachings out of it.
The new stumbling blocks are located in various streets of the Josefstadt. In Josefstädter Straße 43-45, two stones were moved in memory of several people, including Rudolf and Sidonie Ehrenstein as well as Paul Simon and Anna Rubinstein. A few steps away are two more stones that are reminiscent of Hans and Elsa Löwin as well as Isidor and Sophie Rosenbaum, and also of Edith Toth, Maximilian Paul ship and Susanne Marcus.
The meaning of the stumbling blocks
Another stone was placed in Lederergasse 22 to commemorate the memory of former residents of this address. The stone bands are easily recognizable because they are square and made of brass with rounded corners. The names of the victims were originally incorporated into the surface by hand. This form of memory has become possible through the commitment of the owner community.
The attachment of these monuments has an important meaning in the context of dealing with history. The decision to set these stumbling blocks shows how important it is to keep the memory of the victims awake and actively fight against forgetting. Each of these monuments tells a story of loss and hope, and reminds us that respect and memory should have a central place in our society. The district policy -political dialogue about the design and maintenance of these remembrance resorts remains decisive.
The community not only shows responsibility towards the victims, but also to the coming generations to ensure that such atrocities never happen again. This initiative is a small but significant step to raise awareness of the past and at the same time convey a message of compassion and solidarity.
