Musical journey through time: Discover Vienna's subculture in Hernals and Ottakring

In the heart of Hernals, the fascinating story of a bloomed punk phenomenon comes to life. Gerald Hollerer, an enthusiastic record collector and musical nerve, tells with passion with a passionate about a time when it was pulsating in the district and creative freedom inspired the youth to express and resist. At the end of the 1970s, in a tranquil inn called "Lindengarten", numerous local musicians and punks came together to pursue their passion for music and organize concerts.

The year 1980 was a milestone in this unexpected scene. A-gen 53, one of the first women's punk bands in Vienna, appeared and left a lasting impression. The band, the name of which symbolically stood for a vaginal suppository, changed the way music and subculture were perceived. "They just threw the colorful capsules into the audience," recalls Hollerer, adding with a smile: "People thought they were sugar."

creative freedom in Hernals

This anecdote not only gives an insight into creativity and humor of the time, but also shows how the punk movement in Vienna gained strength. Hollerer intends to share these stories as he leads smaller groups through the streets of the district, which were once the backdrop for numerous cultural movements.

"Every corner in Hernals has its own story," he explains with infectious enthusiasm. The connection between the old inns and modern music locations that shape the district today becomes clear when listening to the stories of Hollerer. He gave up his job on the FM4 radio station to devote himself entirely to the "pop culture", which brings both tourists and locals closer to the little of this scene.

Due to his tours, Hollerer not only conveys knowledge about past band history, but also raises awareness of the rich cultural heritage, which slumbers in Vienna's outskirts. The revival of these stories is important to strengthen the cultural identity of the district and to promote a dialogue about the significant role of music in city history.

This is how Hernals' small district becomes the scene of a great cultural return. They are places such as the "Lindengarten" that not only served as backgrounds for concerts, but also as centers for social and creative interactions. The response that these memories still cause among people today is a lively sign of the continuing importance of music in our lives.

"I would like to show people that there is a story behind every note and every appearance," Hollerer concludes with a smile. It remains to be hoped that his plan to put local culture and history more into the light not only arouses interest in the musical roots of Vienna, but also inspires future generations to be creative and find their own way in the music scene.
