With the cold bus: winter help for the homeless in Vienna

An important initiative is starting in Vienna to help homeless people in the cold season. Starting this week, Wiener Linien and Caritas are working together again to help these affected groups of people through the winter. Every Wednesday to Friday, the Caritas cold bus will drive through the city in the evenings until the early hours of the morning, stopping at important transport hubs such as Karlsplatz, Westbahnhof and Meidling.

This measure will begin from Monday November 18th and will continue until the end of winter. The bus runs from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. and has a total of 45 missions planned over the next 15 weeks. Providing homeless people with a safe haven is critical, especially during the harshest months of the year.

Help in the cold

The close cooperation between Wiener Linien and the Caritas street work teams aims to reach as many people as possible who need help. “Nobody should have to spend the night cold and alone in a subway station,” emphasizes Alexandra Reinagl, managing director of Wiener Linien. This collaboration is intended to ensure that urgently needed support is organized quickly and effectively.

Caritas director Klaus Schwertner emphasizes how important this annual campaign is. As temperatures drop, homeless people face enormous challenges, and Caritas plans to increase the number of emergency shelter beds this season. “Every support and every donation offer plays a crucial role,” says Schwertner, adding that every donation can help and bring warmth. In addition, every call to the Caritas cold hotline, which is available around the clock, can potentially save lives.

The initiative by Wiener Linien and Caritas has been running since 2019 and has steadily grown in scope since then. Last winter, 241 consultations were carried out and 26 people found a place in emergency accommodation. These successes show how valuable cooperation between organizations is.

Anyone who comes across homeless people in the city or needs help themselves can contact the Caritas cold hotline at any time on 01/480 45 53. It is important to keep people's plight in mind and support them during these cold months. More on this topic and further details can be found in an article www.meinkreis.at be read.
