New Wiener Wäldchen: Green heart for Floridsdorf on Jedlersdorfer Strasse

Vienna remains at the pulse of time when it comes to green initiatives. Created in 2022, the “Wiener Wäldchen” project pursues the goal of not only making the city greener, but also more resistant to the challenges of climate change. In this context, new mini forests are constantly being worked on. The latest location is located on Jedlersdorfer Straße, where over 20 different types of tree and shrubs are planted.

"Wiener Wäldchen are really a fine solution to create even in densely populated areas of green retreat. They not only help to cool the surroundings, but also offer living space for many local plants and animals," said climate clinic Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) in a press release.

The advantages of mini forests

A “Viennese forest” is characterized by its dense planting and fast growth speed and takes at least 100 m². These compact forests are ideal for urban areas because they take a surface in the size of a tennis court. So they not only bring shadows, they also cool the surroundings through evaporation cooling.

Looking back at good experiences in the 5th district in Stefan-Weber-Park, the concept developed further and further. In the meantime there are nine such groves all over Vienna, and another will follow in November in the 1st district. Every further planting offers the city valuable knowledge of the species that can best adapt to the climatic conditions, as Czernohorszky explained.

The new forest on Jedlersdorfer Straße

The latest project on Jedlersdorfer Straße is a joint project. Various magistrate departments work here, including the Viennese city gardens and the forestry and farm, hand in hand. Local, climate shares trees and shrubs have been set on an area of 300 m².

"This grove is not only an enrichment for the Grätzl, but also promotes understanding of nature and climate protection among children," emphasized district head Georg Papai full of enthusiasm. These initiatives show how important it is to give children awareness of natural topics at an early stage. The so -called “Viennese Wäldchen” can therefore be viewed as a sustainable building block of a family -friendly environment.

The importance of city green and biodiversity is becoming increasingly clear, especially in today's world. The mini forests help not only increase the quality of life, but also to strengthen the local flora and fauna. The dense planting results in optimal conditions for different types of insect, birds and other animals. The project therefore offers many positive aspects in a small space that can also be felt in our hard urban surroundings.
