336,000 euros for security: police action against ethnic conflicts in Vienna

In July 2023, the police in Vienna stepped in with a special campaign that was designed in response to constant ethnic conflicts between Syrian and Chechen adolescents. The costs of this comprehensive police measure amounted to a whopping 336,723 euros, as can be seen from the parliamentary request from the FPÖ MP Hannes Amesbauer, which was answered by the Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP).

This campaign, which was carried out from July 9th to 25th, attracted emergency services from six federal states to support Viennese colleagues. The units used together recorded impressive 4.086 hours. This measure led to a total of 196 ads and 23 arrests, with 41 of these ads concerned and 12 of the arrests were also related to criminal offenses.

important developments and incidents

The reasons for violence between the groups go back deeply in incidents. A particularly serious incident on June 3, in which a Chechen was seriously injured in the Archor park of alleged Syrians, is considered one of the ignition points for the subsequent conflicts. On July 1, there were further disputes in Dopschstrasse, which further fueled the tensions.

The highlight of these arguments took place between July 5 and 7, when violent encounters took place in Brigittenau and at the Meidling train station. During these nightly escalations, several aggressive clashes in which a total of seven people were injured were registered. The last known incident occurred on July 10 at Floridsdorf station, where the Situation escalated again.

The consequences of these violent clashes also resulted in the police personnel. During the focus campaign, a Viennese police officer injured himself in the fall, but remarkably remained without the use of their official weapons. This procedure shows that despite the explosive situations, the goal of the civil servant: above all in the main thing in restoring public security.

These developments skill lightly on the increasing tensions in the region and illustrate the challenges in front of which the security forces are facing. While the police continue to try to keep the situation under control, it remains to be seen which further measures are taken to prevent future conflicts and to ensure the security of the citizens: inside.
