Vienna's greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 11.7 percent in 2023 - progress for climate protection
The city of Vienna has made major progress in the field of greenhouse gas reduction. In 2023, the emission decreased by almost twelve percent compared to the previous year, as the current long -term forecast of the Federal Environmental Office shows. This is almost twice as much as the Austrian average, which is 6.4 percent. These figures illustrate Vienna's commitment to a more sustainable lifestyle.
The decline in particular refers to urban emissions, which also include the air pollutants recorded by European emission trade (ETS). Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) emphasizes that the decline of 11.7 percent for Vienna underlines continuous progress in the city's environmental policy. In the previous year, the reduction was 4.5 percent, which shows that the positive developments did not come overnight, but are due to consistent measures.
Sustainable measures in climate policy
The causes of this decline are diverse. Much of progress can be attributed to the city's initiatives: from the promotion of solar energy to gradual exit from fossil gas to comprehensive support and advisory services. Ludwig confirms these measures to bear the first fruits.
Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) adds that Vienna is on the right track with "targeted climate protection measures" and emphasizes: "The top goal is to keep the high quality of life, which requires serious and socially just climate protection." This means that the measures are not only environmentally friendly, but should also benefit the citizens.
To achieve climate neutrality by 2040, a detailed climate timetable was developed at the beginning of the current government period. The city pursues a clear plan with specific measures and goals, many of which have already been implemented or are currently being elaborated. The committed and targeted approach to Vienna could serve as a model for other cities that want to cope with similar challenges in the field of environmental protection and emission reduction.
The positive trends in Vienna show how important it is to develop long -term strategies to combat climate change and to implement them consistently. A deeper analysis of the measures and its effects on the urban environment can be read on wien.orf.at
