Young gang in court: Series car break-ins information in Vienna

In Vienna, a wave of car bricks causes excitement. Since spring, numerous incidents have accumulated in which young people have taken a uniform pattern, namely by punching window panes into parked vehicles. This series also stopped over the summer and left a lot of damage.

The police reported that numerous burglaries took place in particular in the Donaustadt, Floridsdorf, Leopoldstadt, Leopoldstadt, Brigittenau and Landstrasse. Taxi drivers who are obviously targeted by the perpetrators were particularly affected. It can be heard that at least 500 crimes, of which around 350 burglaries, were recorded during this time, including a damage of around 300,000 euros, as the police noted in a press conference.

first charges against minors

Now there are first charges against the young people in the room. The Vienna public prosecutor's office has targeted four suspects, including three 14-year-olds. Overall, more than 60 allegations burden the minors, as spokeswoman Nina Bussek explained. They are not only accused of thefts, but also unusual offenses such as documents suppression and the unauthorized use of means of payment. The total value of the stolen objects exceeds 5,000 euros.

complex investigations

The investigation into this complex case has not yet been completed. These run via various police stations under the project name "Operation Triangel". So far, two of the young people who were born in Vienna and one of them have Serbian roots. The authority has found that the young people are probably part of a gang that pursues criminal activities in different occupations. According to Bussek, this is at least partially the same group of perpetrators, which, however, often acts in different compositions.

There is currently no concrete overview of the exact number of broken cars because not all crime scenes have been displayed, especially not by taxi drivers who were often affected by the young people. This development has strongly focused on public security in the affected districts.

The traceability of the activity and the delimitation of the individual cases also complicates the determination. According to the latest knowledge of the police, the young people are between 12 and 17 years old and could be responsible for numerous other crimes. The increase in the number of cases between June 28 and July 1 was even underlined by the importance and dimensions of the problem.
