Vienna on the test: Are cars really necessary? 40 households wanted!
The Viennese lines have launched an exciting project that questions the use of cars in the city. In a unique initiative, 40 households in Vienna are sought who are willing to forego their own car from May to July 2025. The participants receive a monthly mobility budget of 500 euros on prepaid credit cards to test alternative transport options, such as publications, car sharing or bike sharing. This project aims to investigate the actual need for your own car in the city and to make the advantages of alternative mobility visible, as orf.at reported.
on the way to the car -free city?
The participants are scientifically accompanied during this three -month test phase. Your daily ways are recorded digitally by an app that serves as a logbook. In addition, personal exchange formats are intended in which the participants are asked about their experiences without a car. Alexandra Reinagl, Managing Director of the Viennese lines, points out that the examination also looks at the motifs behind people's mobility behavior: "We want to show that you do not need your own car in the city," said Reinagl. Applications are possible by February 16, and households are selected by the end of February.
This project is also implemented in cooperation with the Währinger Klimateam, which has already researched similar measures. Up to 20 participants will therefore come from the 18th district. District head Silvia Nossek emphasizes that the test phase will help people to recognize how they can do everyday tasks such as purchases or trips outside the city without a car, and possibly lead to the realization that they no longer need their own vehicle, such as reports.
