A missed comedy: the swamp of the horror during the day

in the theater on Gumpendorfer Straße, also known as day, the premiere of the play "The Swamp of horror" was celebrated last Saturday, a project that promises the audience to entertain with a "Werwolf comedy". But reality turned out to be less amusing and exciting than the announcement suggested.

The day is about to change in the management after Sara Ostertag will take over the management in autumn 2025. In the last self -production of Gernot Plass and Ferdinand Urbach, the ensemble, directed by Kaja Dymnicki and Alexander Pschill, is accompanied by their own experiences in the field of humorous theater. This time the revised, ironic theater offer from some bizarre insights into the 'real' theater life is crossed out, which promises an interesting, if not consistently successful performance.

the course of the premiere

During the performance you can quickly see that the concept of the comedy does not work as planned. Although the actors, namely Georg Schubert, Emanuel Fellmer and Jens Claßen, give everything, they repeatedly encounter the problem that the actual amusement does not really occur. The young actress shown by Lisa Weidenmüller, who has to step in for the role of Lady Macbeth, fights for her place in the middle of banal power games, which partly captivates the audience.

In a shocking turn, however, the difficulties on stage begin after the first half. The director's assistant, who normally ensures the smooth process, disappears, and chaotic scenes arise when the outputs are blocked and the Situation becomes increasingly absurd. However, the director, hoping to get an exciting turn, confuses the desired tension with an unwanted mess that makes it difficult to follow the action.

The representation of Helena Hutten in the role of werewolf should be particularly emphasized. Despite the inadequate tension development, she tries to upgrade the absurd situation and captivate the audience, but this only succeeds. The werewolf, as a central element of comedy, quickly comes too early and does not represent the impending danger to the protagonists in the desired way.

outlook for the future

Gernot Plass, the director of the day, who brings his personal ideas from the theater into the pieces, will perform his farewell piece with "King Lear" on January 18. Plass describes this work as a "song on the patriarchy", and it remains to be seen whether this will offer a more successful connection from entertainment and depth. Due to his role in the past piece, the question remains unanswered what the theater will look like for this era.

For those interested, the piece will be listed on several evenings in November, with everyone who is interested in the day and its unpredictable performances, the opportunity should not miss the opportunity to get an idea of "the swamp of horror". Further information can be found on the website of the theater: www.dastag.at.

The premiere shows how challenging it is to combine theater and humor, and leaves space for discussions about the quality of performances and the limits of the genre. It remains exciting whether the day will get the curve in the remaining time until the management renewal.
