Students in Vienna: from May 2025 Dream apartment without living needs!
From May 1, 2025, there is an extraordinary way for students in Vienna, easier to get to a community apartment. A special campaign for apartment, which runs by September 30, 2025, will offer more than 1,000 community apartments with an area of 35 to 45 square meters. According to Wien.gv.at , the interested parties no longer need an "justified living requirement", which is much easier to access.
Registration for these apartments is online via the website of the Wohnberatung Vienna and is limited to three months. In order to qualify for the special campaign, students have to meet some criteria. This includes current enrollment at a University of Vienna or a university of applied sciences, the completion of the 18th year of life and a continuous main residence in Vienna of at least two years. In addition, Austrian citizenship or equality as well as compliance with the income limits in accordance with the Vienna Wohnbauförderungs Act are required. People who already live in a municipal apartment or want to apply for direct allocation are excluded from this campaign.
statutory innovations
An important point of the special campaign is to change the award criterion for the main residence. From May 2025, it is sufficient to be registered in Vienna for two years, regardless of the number of living addresses, such as wien.gv.at Beton. This regulation is intended to benefit people in particular who often move due to training, job changes or family changes.
In addition, a new contracting category is introduced that supports households that suffer from the prevailing inflation. For this category, applicants need a positive decision for residential allowance or rental allowance. These measures are part of the comprehensive reforms for housing, which strive for more flexible consideration of individual life situations.
social housing in Vienna
Vienna remains a pioneer in social housing and offers its citizens with high quality living space. According to Kontrast.at , almost two thirds of the Viennese population live in subsidized apartments that are often centrally located. The social residential building in Vienna, which is based on the principles of the community apartments, cooperative apartments and additionally funded residential construction, has developed continuously in recent decades.
The city plans to create a total of 22,200 new social housing by 2026 and invests over 1.1 billion euros in residential subsidies. Access to community apartments will in future be facilitated by a central living ticket that requires certain conditions. These significant investments and reforms aim to secure and expand the living space even in times of rising rents for the Viennese.
