Vienna, Österreich - On June 4, 2025, the official groundbreaking for the extension of tram line 18 in Vienna took place. The new route is expanded by 3.1 kilometers between the U3 Schlachhausgasse and the U2 stadium. The completion and commissioning of the new line are planned for autumn 2026. With this measure, an environmentally friendly direct connection between the districts of Leopoldstadt and Landstrasse by the Prater.

The expansion also includes the creation of over 2 kilometers of new cycle paths, including a two-direction cycle path on Meiereiße and new cycle paths in the third district.

The connection of line 18 becomes a central connection in the tram network from east to west and is expected to serve around six million passengers annually. In addition to the construction work on tram line 18, the Viennese lines focus on modernizations in the summer of 2025. From June 28 to September 1, track renovations are carried out on the U4 between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke.
