Mega construction work on the A23: traffic jam chaos until summer 2026!
The road users in Vienna have to adapt to considerable impairments, because since March 17, 2025, a large -scale renovation campaign on the A23 between the Prater node and the Handelskai junction has started. Around 230,000 vehicles pass this section every day, which makes it the most busy street in Austria. These massive construction work will ensure traffic jams and changed traffic tours until the summer of 2026, such as OE24.at reported.
The renovation work is done in several phases. First, the direction of travel north is renovated over ten weeks, with the breakdown strip used as an additional lane. A newly introduced coloring system and a trough track ensure better traffic routing and should help the drivers choose the right track. The Handelskai exit is closed to vehicles that drive on the three left -hand traces during the construction work. Also on the A4 between knot Prater and Schwechat there are covering work and bridge repairs that will take until September 2026, as from the explanations of The press
traffic restrictions as a result of the construction work
The work on the A23 also expands in the opposite direction. From June 23, 2025, the renovation work in the direction of travel will begin and follow the same process as the work in the north. However, the descent towards the center remains open during the entire construction period, which is a small ray of hope for the commuters. The final end of the work in the Prater and Handelskai junctions is planned for August 2026.
