Fight for Vienna: ÖVP wants to bring bourgeois politics back to the town hall!

In the political landscape of Vienna, the Situation is coming to a head! Karl Mahrer, the state party chairman of the ÖVP, prepared for the upcoming municipal council and state elections on April 27, 2025. "We are ready!" Mahrer explained and emphasized the goal of making Vienna better, safer and fairer. He sees the cause of many problems, such as the high number of elementary school students who do not speak German or the exploding debts of the city, in the current red-pink city government. Mahrer calls for a return to bourgeois politics that can clearly name and solve problems instead of ignoring them, as he knows from the Vienna SPÖ and its Neos.

The situation has worsened, however, after Lukas Brucker, the state party secretary of the Viennese FPÖ, asked for the resignation of Mahrer. After the resignation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer, political uncertainty is further fueled, while the failed coalition negotiations between the ÖVP and the SPÖ increase the tensions. Brucker accuses Mahrer of repeatedly spoken out against working with the FPÖ and instead preferred a coalition with the SPÖ under Andreas Babler. He describes this as an undemocratic act and asks Mahrer to draw the consequences while he criticizes the ÖVP as partisan to distract from her internal problems, such as MeinDärzirk reported.

In the middle of these conflicts, the Vienna People's Party makes it clear that the FPÖ will not give it any space for manipulation and is determined to proactively address the upcoming challenges of the city. Peter Sverak, the state manager of the Vienna ÖVP, sees the FPÖ's attacks a desperate attempt to weaken the greatest political competition before the elections. "For us it is clear: the Viennese FPÖ attacks because it feels that our clear course will arrive - a policy that offers solutions instead of volume," explains Sverak and thus defends the position of Mahrers.
