Heat in Vienna: Who particularly suffers from summer glow?
Gregor-Mendel-Straße 33, 1180 Wien, Österreich - Vienna fights against the oppressive heat! Scientists from the Boku and Technical Vienna present alarming results on the health risks of urban heat that are a growing problem for the city population. According to the interdisciplinary project "Urbanheatquality", particularly endangered groups such as children, the elderly and those in need of care are exposed to the highest risks. Maximilian Muhr, spokesman for the project, emphasizes that heat is not only a climatic challenge, but also has deeper social roots. Vacation applications and climate adjustments must primarily benefit these population groups to ensure their security. The researchers show that there is an unequal distribution of the green areas in Vienna, with larger parks mainly present in the outer districts, while more central locations often remain disadvantaged.
urban planning as the key to rescue
An urgent goal of urban theaty is the creation of cooler urban rooms through targeted greening, especially in districts with few green areas. Freshly planted road trees often do not have the necessary size to achieve the desired cooling effect. In addition, the project indicates the socio -economic differences; Low -income groups of people are often settled in the most heat -lined areas. During the upcoming final event on February 12 at the Boku, the researchers and representatives of social organizations will discuss these challenges, while the city is preparing to take urgent measures to combat the heat.
In order to tackle the heat problem comprehensively, initiated projects such as "Stophot" and "Ethnicity Heat" have been proven to improve the lives of older people and migrants during hot periods. These studies aim to develop sustainable adaptation strategies that take into account both individual and social factors. Climate change not only brings rising temperatures, but also higher mortality, as a study on the 2003 heat waves shows, which already caused around 130 deaths in Vienna. It is all the more important that preventive measures are developed and implemented to protect the population, such as stophot emphasized.
