This imbalance is caused by the current economic situation and the increasing life expectancy, which leads to more expensive medical treatments. In the past few months, considerations have already been made to increase health insurance contributions for pensioners from June 1, 2023 to six percent. This measure could probably bring in around 300 million euros and is intended to help avoid cuts in health services, explains Peter McDonald, the head of the ÖGK. In addition, the cash register plans savings of 500 million euros for the entire year 2023, including possible cuts in expensive examinations such as magnetic resonance imaging and computer tomography as well as the frequency of blood tests, which is considered too often.
