ÖGK financial crisis: Doctors require protection for patients in the renovation plan!

The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) faces a financial challenge that could amount to up to one billion euros. This imbalance is caused by the current economic situation and the increasing life expectancy, which leads to more expensive medical treatments. In view of these circumstances, the ÖGK has announced measures to stabilize the financial situation and ensure that patients are not the victims, as the Austrian Medical Association emphasizes.

In the past few months, considerations have already been made to increase health insurance contributions for pensioners from June 1, 2023 to six percent. This measure could probably bring in around 300 million euros and is intended to help avoid cuts in health services, explains Peter McDonald, the head of the ÖGK. In addition, the cash register plans savings of 500 million euros for the entire year 2023, including possible cuts in expensive examinations such as magnetic resonance imaging and computer tomography as well as the frequency of blood tests, which is considered too often.

press conference for renovation

In order to deal with the topic of the renovation in more detail, the Austrian Medical Association invites you to a press conference. This will take place on April 14, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in the Austrian Medical Association in Vienna. President Omr Dr. Johannes Steinhart and Prof. Dr. Dietmar Bayer, Deputy Chairman of the Bundesurie resident doctors, will present crucial information on the "10-point plan for ÖGK renovation". Registration for the press conference can be made by email to pressestelle@aerztammer.at.

The desired savings are in the area of tension on the requirements of high -quality health care. Despite the pressure to work more economically, the Medical Association would like to ensure that this does not happen at the expense of the patients. Therefore, the discussions with the doctors are also looking for savings potential that do not affect the quality of care.

financing of the health system

The financing of the hospitals and health services takes place from various sources. The main financiers are the federal government, the federal states and social security. The funds are distributed through the Federal Health Agency and the State Health Fund, which, among other things, finance hospital stays in public and non -profit acute hospitals. In addition, additional payments from patients and income from private health insurance are important grants for financing the health system.

In view of the current challenges in the health sector, it is of crucial importance that the balance between financial stability and high -quality care is preserved. The press conference of the Austrian Medical Association is therefore expected with great interest.
