Digital Revolution in Vienna: Home role is modernized and accelerated!

Wiener Authorities modernize themselves radically: The digitization of the department for immigration and citizenship (MA 35) is progressing. The service quality and effectiveness of this department has been continuously improved since 2021, as Vice Mayor Bettina Emmerling emphasizes. A central component of this reform is the complete digitization of all internal procedural steps that have been implemented since 2022. New files are only processed digitally, and the associated savings on analog intermediate steps enable faster and more flexible processing processes, which is of great advantage for all citizens. In addition, inquiries about the procedural status should now be answered faster, which significantly increases efficiency, according to wien.gv.at .

A significant part of this digital transformation is the so -called home role. This important database, which has recorded all “home beneficiaries” in Vienna since 1848, is now also digitized. The home role contains detailed civil status data, including birth and place of residence, and serves as the basis for numerous administrative processes, including the issue of proof of citizenship. In cooperation with the invoice and submission department, careful digitization of historical documents is sought in order to obtain the valuable data for future generations. This digitization not only brings advantages for efficiency, but also ensures that the historical data, some of which come from outstanding personalities, are preserved sustainably. Head of Department Georg Hufgard-Leitner emphasizes the challenges associated with digitization, in particular the handling of the sensitive, partially faded documents, such as wien.gv.at reported.
