Vienna election: Heat of discussions-inflation, asylum and minimum security!

On Tuesday evening, the elephant round of the top candidates for the Vienna election took place, which will take place next Sunday, April 27, 2025. Central topics such as living, inflation and asylum were addressed in the discussion round. Mayor Michael Ludwig from the SPÖ, which is currently in the lead in surveys with 38.4%, emphasized that Vienna has provided most of the support measures for households. He also announced investments of 3.3 billion euros in healthcare.

Dominik Nepp from the FPÖ criticized Ludwig Scharf for increasing district heating prices and health insurance contributions. He took the view that a change in money to benefits in kind for asylum seekers could solve integration problems. Karl Mahrer from the ÖVP rejected the accusation of pension cuts as untrue.

A controversial topic during the discussion was the minimum security. Nine -percent Syrian family in Vienna received around 4,600 euros per month, which caused political turmoil in August when FPÖ and the media uncovered such cases. According to a survey by "Unique Research", in which 1,200 Viennese participated, 61% are in favor of a nationwide standardization of minimum security. Around a third of the respondents want to maintain the current height. Especially among voters of the ÖVP and FPÖ, the desire to reduce minimum security is strongly pronounced. 86% of the ÖVP supporters require a lowering, while it is 69% for the NEOS.

Judith Pühringer from the Neos called for an Austrian -wide regulation for minimum security and spoke out against further diversification of support services. In connection with the minimum security, Ludwig suggested that this should be handled by the AMS for work capable. In doing so, he reacted to the challenges that exist within education and migration, especially caused by the influx of children.

The discussion also showed the different approaches of the parties in terms of future coalition formation. Ludwig strives for a coalition of the political center and refers to his many years of experience with various coalitions. The current election trend shows that the SPÖ is 38.4% before the FPÖ with 21.7%. The Greens come to 12.3%, while the ÖVP gets back into the background with 11.1% and the NEOS at 9.4%. A majority in parliament needs 51 out of 100 MPs.

Overall, the election trend indicates that left -wing parties dominate, while right -wing parties are weaker. In the past three months, the SPÖ has reached an increase of 1.4%, while the NEOS had to accept a loss of 0.6%.
